Kids’ Woodworking

Activity Number: 9540

Location: SUNNYSIDEPLGD – Multi Purpose Room at SUNNYSIDE PLGD

Kids’ Woodworking students are excited to use equipment and tools in our well-equipped woodshop. They create their own projects from raw materials. Kids build skills, such as how to safely use tools. They apply their school mathematics in a practical application, discovering the importance of taking time to measure accurately. They will practice their skills with an inch ruler; learn how to get precise lines using squares, and clamp their wood for cutting with hand saws. They’ll learn how to use hand tools and some power tools. Working in a fun and supportive atmosphere, students also practice problem solving mistakes so they can successfully complete their projects.

Woodcarving for Kids

Activity Number: 9539

Location: SUNNYSIDEPLGD – Multi Purpose Room at SUNNYSIDE PLGD

This is an introduction to woodcarving for youth with an emphasis on safety; students can take this class more than once. First timers start by carving a simple low relief design using traditional hand carving methods. We learn about basic properties of wood, what each tool does, and how to use those tools safely. After completing the beginning project, students are encouraged to express their individual artistic vision and can choose between several different projects that will further develop their new skills. Advanced students will work on individualized projects tailored to their interests.

Arduino Workshop for Younger Kids

Activity Number: 9554

Location: MISSIONART – Upstairs Classroom at MISSION ART REC CENTER

This class is especially fun for younger students who are curious about programming and electronics. We’ll explore the creative possibilities of Arduino, a popular open-source electronics platform that’s used to create interactive projects- anything from talking clocks to tiny robots and beyond. While making fun projects like roving robots or hacking electronic toys, you’ll learn how to set up the Arduino micro-controller board to sense the environment by receiving inputs from sensors, and how to make it affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. This is a project-based introductory workshop: no electronics experience or programming is necessary. Basic Arduino supplies and laptops are provided for students to use during the workshop.
