CERAMICS

The Randall Museum ceramics studio is one of the few places in the city where the public can take ceramics classes.  Our roomy studio, with its stunning location overlooking San Francisco and the Bay, offers students the opportunity to use both electric and kick wheels.  All work is bisque-fired in our new, state-of-the-art electric kiln.  The studio has both high- and low-fire glaze firing capabilities.  Look for exciting new classes for adults and children, as well as our ongoing community favorites.

General Potter's Wheel

Want to learn the potter's wheel or increase your pottery skills?  This class will stress the fundamentals of throwing, from wedging to centering, and forming the walls of the pot.  Students will begin by throwing bowls and progress at their own pace to more advanced forms such as vases and plates.  $25 material fee payable to Randall Museum Friends.  Instructor:   Andrew Kontrabecki

Zen & Sawdust: Tables

Our beginning woodworking classes introduce the tools, techniques and machinery used for cabinetmaking. We also introduce students to the properties of wood, and the differences between common species of hardwoods and softwoods. Small classes mean students learn the basic skills and also grasp how design and craftsmanship interrelate in a very practical way. Classes are centered on specific projects which have a basic theme for each session. Projects vary from small pieces of furniture like end tables to jewelry boxes. Each student can interpret the session's theme in a way that suits his or her own design sense.  Making furniture involves combining knowledge of the material, knowledge of the tools and machines, and a sense of form and three-dimensional design.   $50 material fee to instructor.  Prerequisite:  Woodworking Safety Orientation.  Students who fail to complete the prerequisites will be withdrawn and charged a 20% refund processing fee.  Instructor:  Tim O’Mahoney
